Thesis resume
Evaluations carried out in the school context are sources of academic recognition. They may, however, also induce anxiety in each school discipline, called test anxiety. The main aim of this thesis was, through three studies, to answer the following question: how can we identify, measure and understand school test anxiety in general and, in particular, test anxiety in Physical Education (PE) of French students?
Defined in the 1950s in a general and one-dimensional way, test anxiety is now regarded as multidimensional. The literature agrees on two dimensions, a cognitive dimension and an affective-physiological dimension, each measured on different subscales. While the 2017 PISA study highlighted that French pupils are anxious in evaluations, to date there has been no French-language validated psychometric scale with which to measure school test anxiety (i.e., pupils general test anxiety, regardless of the school subject). Moreover, in the literature, test anxiety has only been envisaged negatively. However, research on competitive anxiety in sport has shown a positive dimension of anxiety, namely perceived control, which enables the individual to mobilize more efforts to achieve his/her objectives when faced with a threat. Hence, in a first study, a French-language scale measuring school test anxiety and integrating perceived control was developed and validated. It consists of five subscales (worry, test-irrelevant thoughts, bodily symptoms, somatic tension, perceived control).
An analysis of the particularities of PE (e.g., the public character of the competence, the involvement of the body) then showed the limits of the scales measuring school test anxiety in a general way and the need to propose a scale specifically measuring test anxiety in PE. The second study of the thesis, pursuing the problematic of the first, led to the development and validation of a scale measuring PE test anxiety through five subscales (worry, self-focus, bodily symptoms, somatic tension, perceived control) and a more specific formulation of the items in the questionnaire. The results also showed a difference in PE test anxiety between girls and boys, with girls declaring higher scores than boys in the negative dimensions of PE test anxiety, and perceived lower control scores.
Validation of the scale measuring PE test anxiety made it possible to identify antecedents that might influence it. The third study of the thesis therefore focused on the relation between PE test anxiety and the 3 x 2 achievement goal model recently used in the literature on school test anxiety. Categorized according to three definitions (task, self, other) and two valences (approach, avoidance), competence can be defined in this model through six achievement goals. The aim of this study was thus to measure the predictive role of the 3 x 2 achievement goal model on PE test anxiety, and the possible moderating role of gender. The results of this study showed that the different achievement goals were indeed predictors of PE test anxiety, but that the predictions were both similar and different with respect to those identified in school test anxiety, thereby confirming all the grounds for developing PE-specific psychometric scales. In this third study, the students gender remained a strong predictor of PE test anxiety, but no significant moderating role of gender between achievement goals and PE test anxiety was identified.
The work for this thesis thus made it possible, on the one hand, to validate two tools measuring school test anxiety and PE test anxiety (integrating a regulatory dimension of test anxiety) and, on the other hand, to identify antecedents of PE test anxiety based on the 3 x 2 achievement goal model. These first results suggest several promising avenues for research on PE test anxiety, a field not previously investigated in the literature.
